When I was younger I used to limit my art to characters frozen in a single scene or pose. Technique was based on choices made on the spot in short fast decisions. With these limitations I had felt like I hit a ceiling with my artistic wants and needs. For a while I was working the same process over and over till things seemed to blur together. Nothing was clear, randomness and lack of deep concept seem to plague my work.

Then a strange variety of classes came my way in the middle of college: Philosophy, Evolution, Animal Behavior, Figure Drawing, Architechtual Drawing and Holography. These classes really taught me to be more clear to myself; which opened the door to understanding systems and harmony more than I ever thought possible.

Before my focus was simply Animation and story-making, but to be a good story teller one needs an understanding of cause and effect. Spending time on training the eyes and mind to catch and analyze situations, dissecting them and understanding the components of interactions. The mixing of scientific understanding with metaphysical logic makes the concept of time and space a wild ride.

The process of Animation allows metaphor to be used more clearly by seeing cause and effect spread and travel through time and space. I have always enjoyed cartoons in the theaters for the pristine quality of setting, but TV animation can say just as much and a lot faster. The structure of metaphors that come from shows like The Simpons and Southpark have been big influences on me in the past, and now that I can look at these works in deeper understanding I realize that limitations aren’t from the artist they are from reality.
